Sleep Tracking With Wearables

NeuroonMAYLAY MAIL ONLINE - Sept 28 -

NeuroOn is a sleep mask that claims to afford individuals an extra day in the week by means of brainwave and eye movement sensing technology that rapidly induces the transition from monophasic sleep to deep polyphasic sleep. (US$299)

Sense is a 2-piece device that includes a small pillow attachment, Sleep Pill, that tracks motion during sleep and analyses the data to assess sleep quality, while the decorative nightstand piece measures light, noise and air quality. (US$129)

The Withings Aura has a bedside device that tracks sound, temperature and light levels and integrates a lamp that works on a system that correlates light and secretion of melatonin, the hormone responsible for circadian rhythms. (US$299.95)

Aurora by iWinks detects REM sleep and induces lucid dreams through a combination of lights delivered by means of a sensor-equipped mask and sounds from a corresponding bedside device. (US$199)

Vigo (US$79) and Spark (US$49), both keep the user awake in situations where it may be inappropriate to doze off. Vigo is worn mounted on the head—a plastic vector from eye to ear—and may not be discreet enough for some users. Spark is a wristwatch that vibrates upon detecting motions indicative of sleep.

Connected Objects Predict User Behavior

Computer-shopper-crystal-ballRUDE BAGUETTE - June 16 - Connected objects typically lack rich interfaces, and require well designed software to make them convenient. Usage data can be analyzed to predict the user's next move, as well as identify the user. For example, the Withings scale can identify the person using it by their previous measurements. The Bike Finder app for Google Glass locates the nearest bike station, but predictive analysis could let the app determine your destination based on past usage and provide navigation. Google's Prediction API is available for developers, and has been used in a Ford prototype for destination prediction. Disney is also analyzing visitor behavior through its MagicBand to generate additional revenues.
