Swatch Takes On Apple In China’s Wearables Market

Swatch logoIFREE PRESS - Oct 14 - Swiss watchmaker Swatch has teamed up with state-run China UnionPay Co and state-controlled lender Bank of Communications to develop a mobile-payment watch. China’s mobile payment transactions jumped 134 percent to 22.6 trillion yuan ($3.6 trillion) in 2014, according to the central bank.

Swatch Goes For Cheap, Quick And China

Swatch ceoREUTERS - Mar 12 - Swatch Group will start offering watches with NFC chips within two months. The Swiss company's strategy appears to revolve around including individual tech features in different models rather than going head to head with Apple. For its near-field chips, Swatch has teamed up with China UnionPay, the Chinese credit card association, as well as a Swiss bank and a major credit card company.

Swatch Smartwatch Won't Need To Be Charged

Swatch mosaicMASHABLE - Feb 5 - Swatch is gearing up to launch a smartwatch that will work with Android and Windows smartphones, the device will be able to connect to the Internet and allow users to pay for items in stores. Eliminating the need to charge a smartwatch daily, or even weekly, would give the Swatch smartwatch a huge advantage over other models, but would guarantee the watch wouldn't be as high-tech as its competitors in the space.

Swatch Group Will Not Pursue Smartwatch

Swatch Plans To Unveil Own Smartwatch Next Summer

Swatch logoITPROPORTAL - Sep 1 - Swatch CEO Nick Hayek said his company's new device would likely include fitness capabilities. However, he said that there would be some other cool "Swatchy" things on the boil, too, and the latest Bluetooth tech would be employed in the wrist-wear (low-power Bluetooth for better battery life – another key challenge the smartwatch presents). The company hasn't ruled out collaboration with another firm.

The company will use its own electronic components in the updated device, as to not be reliant on software and components from other companies.

Swatch Waiting For Smartwatch Market To Grow

SwatchBLOOMBERG – June 17 – Swatch is waiting for the smartwatch market to grow before launching its own, though the company has all of the needed technology. The company plans to sell components to other manufacturers, quietly benefiting from a potential revolution in the $62B watch industry. Swatch currently supplies an unnamed U.S. fitness band maker. Increased sales of smartwatch components could generate $222M in sales for Swatch. An Apple smartwatch is expected to generate $11B in annual revenues. IDC forecast shipments of wearables to reach 112M units in 2018, up from ~19M this year.
