DIGITAL TRENDS - Oct 29 - Reports from South Korea suggest Samsung has sold 600K wearable units in the 3rd quarter, but that sales figure pales in comparison to the 4.5M reported Apple Watch sales during the same 3-month period. Strategy Analytics noted 6.1M wearable sales during the July-September period. Apple took the lion’s share with 72.8%, while Samsung slumped into second with 9.8%.

Nokia "Coop" To Start Testing In 2016
CCM - Oct 28 - Nokia is set to take its intelligent transportation system offering to the streets, with help from Finnish traffic agencies in a pilot called Coop. Intelligent transportation systems typically use short-range communications but Nokia's initiative uses existing commercial mobile networks. The Coop trial follows a successful trial of a cellular C-ITS system earlier this year in Helsinki.
UC Davis Team Gets $1.8M DARPA Grant For Sensor Technology
SACRAMENTO BUSINESS JOURNAL - Oct 28 - The DARPA grant will support research by a group that includes UC Davis engineering professor David Horsley and his colleagues, Xiaoguang "Leo" Liu and Rajeevan Amirtharajah. The team will work on the project with San Jose-based InvenSense Inc. to develop a sensor that uses almost no power, but can wake up when a sought-after signal occurs, such as an engine noise or a vibration.

Wearables To Jump Almost 60% This Year
CNET - Oct 28 - Wearable devices are most popular among US adults between 25 and 44, who are the biggest trackers of fitness data. This year, about one-quarter of them will use a wearable device, and by 2018, the volume will rise to about half of that cohort. Over the next three years, US adults 65 and older will account for the biggest jump in wearable devices as more health monitors hit the market, eMarketer said.
