SF GATE - Aug 31 - Proteus Digital Health has developed a pill that when swallowed sets off a chain of reactions in the body that ultimately pings an app on a mobile device and logs the pill as well as information about metrics such as heart rate, activity and rest. A physician or caretaker looking at the app on a smartphone or tablet can see if the patient has taken the pill, a placebo, presumably along with other medications. Proteus' vision for tackling that problem has attracted hefty investment, including the Carlyle Group, Essex Woodlands, Kaiser Permanente, Medtronic, Novartis and Oracle. In late July, the privately held company raised more than $172M in its 7th and latest round of funding, bringing its total to at least $266M.
