THE STAR - June 16 - In Q1 2014, 2.8M wrist-worn devices shipped globally, with smartwatches accounting for only 510K of those. That number is down from Q4 2013. Smartwatch development will increase rapidly in 2014 and 2015, bringing more hybrid activity tracker/smartwatches to market, more specialized components, a growing app ecosystem leading to improved use cases. Prices must decrease as well. The launch of the Moto 360 and LG G Watch this summer should boost the market. A UBS analyst believes Apple could sell 21M iWatches in 2015 and 36M in 2016. ABI expects 10M activity and 7M smartwatches to ship by the end of 2014.
