THE VERGE – May 23 – While working on a beaver tracking project for NASA in 1973, Alex Pentland, gained the inspiration which helped develop modern wearables. Having spearheaded or inspired the development of everything from Google Glass to fitness trackers, Pentland has been dubbed the godfather of wearables. His latest project, the sociometer, utilizes an accelerometer to track movement, a microphone to capture voice, Bluetooth to detect other sociometers, and an infrared sensor to tell when you’re engaging those nearby people face-to-face. The tech has application in a number of environments, including medicine, employee interaction, and research.
